He thought the Model A was too soft to be a real truck

With the differences in controls before they were standardized into the current layout, this man probably CANNOT drive anything else.  Imagine suddenly after 70 years the throttle was controlled by squeezing a stress ball with your left hand rather than the right foot pedal.

I hope this is me one day.  Although I doubt that I can keep going with the truck unmodified. In 50 years, gas maybe hard to come by.

You really think he never rented a car or drove one of his kid’s cars?

Point taken, though.

Hmm... 50 years? I’m guessing you’ll still be able to get it; might just be taxed like crazy.

Really?

I think you’d have to buy online in barrels

It doesn’t have an odometer, does it? The article probably would’ve mentioned if so.

46 more years with the fintail, and I’m there.

China and some European countries are already working to phase out ICE cars, but North America is a very different place (wide open spaces where you need a fuel that’s easily portable/refillable). There may be cities or counties in the U.S. that do away with gasoline for the most part, but unless there’s some major technological change that increases average range and recharge time for electric cars (or our respective governments get super restrictive) , I really don’t see that much changing in 50 years. Cars will get safer, lighter and more efficient, and many will move to electric for commuting , so overall hydrocarbon demand will go down (in some places), but in rural areas and for long distances (trucking), it’s hard to see the big change happening yet.

The usable life of a semi truck is 20+ years. Do I think they’ll still be making and selling them in 30 years? Yes. At the most, you might have to drive to a truck stop for your dino juice when you’re 75.

BC has already adapted a law to ban ICE cars by a certain date.  Metro Vancouver is super dense and has intense public transport

Ban sales of new ICE cars, you mean? Makes sense.

Whole different story in Alberta/Saskatchwan/Manitoba...

Need gas for snowmobiles, too. =)

I’ll be 88 then, so not far off from Model T guy. The odds may not support it, but here’ s hoping.

Honestly, I think it’s probably the right move for many city centers. Restrict cars to the outskirts (except for a few hours for business deliveries), make more walkable/bikeable, offer free electric buses or trolleys to ferry folks around.

But what about the BC easterners and northerners? You’re just taking away their ability to buy a new vehicle with a laughable infrastructure to make do without an ICE vehicle? Hopefully there are easy exemptions for those that deserve them.

I look at some lifespans in my family tree, and am optimistic, others, not so much.

Fintail should still be around though, as long as it is kept up.

People like banning stuff, it might be hard. I wouldn’t be shocked if new semis are all electric in way less than 30 years. They are actually really well suited for it, especially if self-driving becomes a thing, because you can just swap out the tractor for a fully charged one (obviously this is harder if you are still dealing with a driver, but you can either rig up a hot-swap battery pack, or a swap-able cab section or maybe you make them with enough battery that when they need to charge, they are timed out anyway) .

Regardless, personal vehicles are harder to deal with since they can’t separate their cargo (unless you go to wildly different car configuration).

I’d say rather than a blanket ban it would make sense to have much higher fuel taxes, and then perhaps some restrictions on driving into cities (enforced either by pulling vehicle info based on the plate, or by mobile emissions testing). You could also do a big toll to enter the city instead of banning altogether.

I think odometers were an extra cost option on the Model T.
